The fact that I could not bring myself to finish this book even in audiobook format where I'm often a captive audience and even when the book is not great, I tend to finish it, saddens me. This book is so highly acclaimed and has so graced so many "best of" lists that I thought it would definitely bring me out of my "I'm bored of traditional Regency romance" slump. Alas, it did not.
While the writing was everything that other 5 star reviews said it was - witty, clever, bright, funny, it just didn't captivate me.
I found myself feeling bored and frustrated while I listened even though the narrator, Kate Reading was superb. She's probably the best narrator I've encountered in my short history of listening to audiobooks with her plummy British accent and her wonderful variations in voices.
I got to about 20% of the story and thought "I've heard this story about a thousand times before" in the traditional Regency romance genre and I've read so many of them, in so many "same but different" variations that I think I've reached my limit.
I just got to the point where I did not care what was going to happen between Dain and Jessica because I could predict a large part of the plot. I felt like I was just so over the fact that the beast of a hero was brought to his knees by the wit and love of a unique heroine who thaws his cold, black heart. Been there, done that, got tired of it, moving on.
Fact is, I'm sorry I didn't love this book. I wanted so much to love it as much as all the other 5 star reviews did but it didn't do it for me and I just couldn't bring myself to finish it.
Don't judge this book by my review only though. This book is highly acclaimed for a reason. It's held up as a classic of the genre and the writing has stood the test of time. The writing is good. It's not the book, it's me. If you are curious about this book, read it for yourself and see which side of the fence you fall on. Don't take my word for it.
For myself, I think I need to read something different, something new and fresh in the genre.
