Gah! How do I ... ? I can't even ... !!! It's like, OMG!, college co-eds. For the better part of this book, all you get is college drama, Cash and Nicola dancing around each other and everyone else dancing around them. Jay wants Nicola. Nicola wants Cash. Mira and Jaycee want Cash. Cash wants Nicola. Roman gets overprotective. Cash gets jealous. Brandy gets suspicious. Brandy and Hannah get drunk. Nicola is confused. Cash still wants Nicola. And so it goes. Lots and lots of typical college kids drama. So realistic and to authentically written, I want to tear my hair out and slap a few people around and say "grow up already!"
This story is the prequel to Cash and Nicola's story in Book 2 of the Titan series, Garrison's Creed. This tells us of the connection between Cash and Nicola and what they mean to each other.
Cash is your cocky college superstar. Incredibly good looking, popular and in love with Nicola for as long as he can remember. I adored Cash. He's the kind of guy I wish I had fallen for when I was in college. Smart, funny, popular, kind, sexy and sweet, and so in love with you, it makes your teeth ache.
Nicola is the kid sister of another college superstar, Roman. She's cute, she's shy and she's a little unsure of herself around Cash because her feelings for him scares her. She also made me a little impatient with her because I wanted her to make up her mind, grab onto Cash and not let go, then tell the world instead of hiding it.
They've known each other forever and try to navigate what it means being a couple and being in love means rather than being best friends. It's cute and sweet, and perhaps a little frustrating as they find their way to each other.
And then it all gets ripped away.
It's heartbreaking. Even when I knew how it would end because of reading the blurb to Garrison's Creed, it still breaks my heart. It breaks my heart because you see the connection and the sweet love between a young Cash and Nicola. So full of hope, so sure of the future, so innocent, and in the blink of an eye, it all gets wiped away.
The ending is a little predictable. Ms Harber does a good job of building to what happens to Nicola in the end and even though you see it coming from a mile away, your heart still hurts when it happens.
You cry because Cash cries. You ache because Nicola's world has fallen apart. And you know, for the foreseeable future, for many, many years to come, their lives will never be the same.
Even though Sweet Girl is the prequel to (and was written after) Garrison's Creed, I have been told you don't need to read it to enjoy Garrison's Creed. Me, being rather OCD, I like to read things in order. It helped me to see the connection between Cash and Nicola before I get into their story and how they get their happy ending. What more, after reading this, I want them to have their happy ending.
For the better part of the story, with all the college shenanigans (Ms Harber nails college life!) this sat at a solid 3 stars for me, but being the sap I am, and with the ending the way it was, it was bumped up to a solid 4 stars. Ms Harber has a tendency to do that to me with her writing. I sit along comfortably at a certain level with the book and then without me realising it, she pulls something from under me and blows me away. It's happen twice now and I think it will likely happen again if she remains true to form.
A few things to note: I listened to this rather than read it. I enjoyed Jeffery Kafer again as a narrator. He sort of grows on you after a while. Ms Harber's style also takes a little getting used to. She uses very short, punchy sentences in her writing. Her descriptions and dialogue are both sharp and shiny. There are no extraneous words used. It's a bit like reading or listening in staccato. It takes a little getting used to, but once you do, you realise she has a certain skill in delivering the most impact with the least number of words.
I've also got Garrison's Creed one-clicked and Whispersync for Voice ready to go. It's my next audiobook listen / read.
